.THE ST. KILDA CUP. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOC7ATION—COPYRIGHT MELBOURNE, March 15. The St. Tvilda Cup resulted: Jackstaff 1, Valwvn 2, Spearage 3. Fourteen started. Won by a neck. Time, 2.33). NOTES BY ‘MAECENAS.” The sporting world of Taranaki wili be en fete to-morrow (Tuesday, the occasion being the popular race meeting of the Opunake Racing Chib. The. Rangitikei Racing Club received splendid acceptances for their annual meeting) which takes place on Friday and Saturday next. A large number of Taranaki-owned horses figure in the Rangitikei acceptances, but some of .them may not make the trip unless their form is good tomorrow

In all his recent races Blue Peter has been noticed finishing on well at the end of six furlongs. He is engaged in the Hack Welter, run over seven furlongs at the Opunake meeting, and may reward his painstaking trainer. When My Hobby raced at Marten meeting in the spring, his age was given in the correct card (B) as aged. At the time 1 thought it strange that Mr A. B. Williams should start racing a gelding of that age. Further investigations show that My Hobby is a rising four-year-old. Should a registered acing club net hold a race meeting in a limited time, I’he Racing Conference usually strike such clubs off the official register. The Waimarino Club were one so penalised ; yet the Minister of Internal Affairs granted this body a totaLisator permit. If The Banker reproduces the good form of the recent Egmont and Taranaki meetings in the race for the Opunake Cup to-morrow, lie will tar.e a power of beating in that event. As a contestant has to be well seson ed to run out the U» miles of the St Leger, to be run at Trentham on the 26th of this month, a race An '-he Opunake Cup should do much for The. Banker, which in a very weak fie e appears to have an excellent chance m the Wellington classic race. Objector, which hails from the same stable as Domna and Yuma-, had only been in work a few weeks prior to racing at Stratford, but he ran a very creditable race there, and may trouble Monaghan and Closefire in the Maiden Plate at Opunake to-morrow. At present there is a big field engaged in the Farewell Handicap to be run at the Opunake meeting, but as a big proportion of them have prior engagements, many of the runners' may not lie saddled up twice. If reserved for this event, Sunny Vale may show better form than he usually does at Opunake. In his success at the recent Woodville meeting, Quillfire was always in front, but as the class was not good the performance can be discounted, and for this reason Solferange may he capable of presenting I4lhs to Quillfire in the Electric Hack at Opunake to-mor-row.

The Opunake Racing Club are indeed unfortunate to strike such an unsatisfactory race as SI. Patrick’s Handicap may prove, more especially as the good prize of £250 is offered. The club certainly deserved a better response. In Irapuka, Awake and Euchre -lie Hack Hurdles Handicap at Opunake contains three aspirants that have, in the past performed well on the flat. Tf proficient at inlnping any ol the trio may be capable of winning, but they would want this qualification to heat a clever jumper like Te Kawa.

Sunny Vale showed good form without wetting on Lite winning list at the las't Wanganui meeting, hub in the past this gelding has not performed well on such tracks as that of Opunake, which is all in favour of a good beginner like Troilus,' which is certain to run well in the President’s Hack. By the misdirection of a telegram. Jubilant did not appear as an acceptor for the St laager, to he run at the coming meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. Such omission was not due to the secretary of the club or the owner concerned. Realising this, the committee of the Wellington Racing Club decided to instruct their secretary to write owners having horses engaged in the St. l*jger witli a view to seeing if they are agreeable to Jubilant starting in the event. The incident is a most unusual one, and it is doubtful if Jubilant can compete, even if other owners are agreeable. In a statement issued through the Press'by the Minister of Internal Affairs after the allocation of th.e additional racing permits, it appeared to the casual reader that the Minister and the Racing Conference were practically unanimous in regard to those clubs that received such permits. Ay the time 99 per cent, of sportsmen were astounded at the list, and were much surprised when it was made public that such a well-informed body of racing enthusiasts as the members of the Racing Conference are should agree to such proposals. The controversy recently carried on by the President of the ’ Racing Conference (Sir G. Clifford) and the Minister responsible for the allocation of such permits (Hon. Bollard) sheds a very different light on the subject, and shows clearly that there was very little similarity between the recommendations of "he Racing Conference and tile final list issued by the responsible Minister. Indeed, from Hon. Mr Bollard’s own statement, there is a note of apology, and an attempt to saddle the Racing Conference with a certain amount of responsibility. If the allocation has done justice to all clubs that applied for permits, why these apologetic' statements. It is now obvious that Government members realise that the allocation of these permits should not have fallen on a member of Parliament, and the business . has ended unsatisfactorily- .
