A correspondent from Lower Hutt writes to the Wellington Post: “Quite a feature during the past six weeks has been the ‘parking of thousands of seagulls and other marine birds at night on the Recreation Ground. They sit facing the north in a compact mass, while on the outskirts of the main body the smaller birds are walking about looking, I presume, for grubs or or worms. A few occasionally take a short circling flight and come to rest. It is well known that in stormy, boisterous weather the birds come inland for shelter, and at such times numbers pass o'er the Valley from east to west coasts and vice versa. This year the largest number was seen on the cold, frosty mornings, and even yet a few of the larger birds lemain until 8 a.m. Ten years ago the birds foregathered in a paddock near the railway station, but as the buildings grew "they left. Apropos of the remark in a, local in July 26th issue that the gulls at Cameron’s Line, near Aorangi, were waiting to pick out the eyes of the weak lambs, I have seen them among the sheep from Wanganui to New Plymouth, and I have never heard from farmers that they did so.
