THE SEA SCOUTS. ('BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 2. The competition for the sea scouts trident given by Lord Jellicoe (Dominion Chief Scout) for the lmost proficient sea scout troop in the Doriiinion resulted: Iron Duke Troop (Nelson), 93 points, 1; First Gallipoli Troop (Auckland), 90 points, 2; Trafalgar Troop (Lyttelton), 73 points, 3; Port Nicholson Troop (Wellington) 61 points, 4; Cornwall Troop (Sumner-Redcliffs), 52 points, 5. ~ MINERS’ STRIKE OVER. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 2. The strike at the New Brighton and Birchwood mines was settled to-day, and work will be resumed on Monday. The men are to receive 2d per ton increase in the hewing rate in lieu of getting detonators free of charge. MILD WEATHER, WELLINGTON, Aug. 4. July in Wellington was almost phen_ omenal for the mid-winter month. The rainfall was 48 per cent, below the average, and the sunshine 41 hours above the average. There were only two days when no sunshine was recorded. The mean temperature, despite several frosts, was higher than usual, and the prevailing wind was northerly, instead of the regular winter southerly.
