ABANDONED FARMS.

TERMS OF RESUMPTION. (By Telegraph.—Special to ' the Star.) . WELLINGTON, July 31.. . According to Mr. Masters (Stratford), ; settlers who take up farm« abandoned by the original soldier settlers -are being asked by Land Boards to deposit 10 per cent, of the capital value as a Condition of resumption. . He. asked the Minister for Lands if this is the general practice, and was assured by the Hon. A. D. McLeod that it is not the general policy in ia-11 cases. In many eases where soldiers’ lands had been abandoned, said the Minister, the land had been taken .under part 2 of the Act, in which case there had to be public competition to clear up the outstanding mortgages. He believed in these cases the Lands Department had required deposits, but this was subject to investigation by the Land Board, and if other satisfactory proofs were forthcoming of the ability of a settler to successfully farm the area a deposit was not required.
