Magistrate's Court.

(Before Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M.)

FRIDAY, 12th NOV.

FALSE PRETENCES.

Eaghan Doherty, alias Henderson, alias Doughty, a well dressed young man of good appearance, pleaded guilty to obtaining board and lodging by false pretences at the Albert Hotel, to the value of 15s. Accused deposed that he was under the influence of liquor when he went to the Albert Hotel. He obtained work on the 10th, two days after his arrival, and had been working ever since. He had no iflea that he was liable to be proceeded against on a charge of false pretences, otherwise he would not have acted in such a manner. He admitted the list of previous convictions and attributed the cause to drink. Sergeant Smart stated that accused arrived in Hastings on November Bth and went to the Albert Hotel, where he saw the proprietor and told him that he was working for Mr J. Larritt, tailor The statement was untrue. Cases similar to the one before the Court were of daily occurrence, and it was with a view of protecting the public from being imposed upon that Mr O'Donoghue had laid an information.

The Magistrate said that the practice of persons obtaining board and lodgings by means of false pretences was becoming far too prevalent in the Dominion. For the accused to say that he did not know the consequence of such an act. was nonsense. A man's conscience should guide him in such matters. He (the Magistrate) would have to protect hotel and boardinghouse keepers in such cases. Accused, was convicted, and sentenced to one months' imprisonment with hard labour. JUDGMENT ORDER. G. F. Roach v Fred Deott, £3O 4s 4d To be paid forthwith, in default three months' imprisonment. Order suspended during the payment of sums of 10s monthly.

An attractive display of the lateit floral designs in Bayreuth ware will be made in G. F. Roach's window this evening.
