Fire Brigade and the Council.
CAPTAIN BRAUSCH'S SERVICES RECOGNISED. Councillor George at last night's meeting of the Council moved the motion standing in his name "That a bonus of £lO be voted to Fire Inspector Brausch for services rendered." in moving the motion Cr George said that although he did not agree with the -methods of the Brigade in fire fighting, he recognised that the Fire Inspector had given a good deal of time to the work, therefore he moved the motion. Cr Cassin said he had much pleasure in seconding the motion. He considered that the Brigade, under Fire Inspector Brausch had done excellent work in saving ptoperty in the town, especially when it was taken into consideration the way in which the firemen were handicapped in respect to proper appliances. Cr Fowler moved as an amendment that the sum of £25 be To his mind it was nothing less than an insult to offer the Fire Inspector the paltry sum of £lO for 10' years' work. It would be better to vote ,nothing at all than £lO. Cr Styles seconded the amendment. He said that he bad many opportunities of witnessing the excellent work done by the Brigade, and • Captain Brausch had proved himself well worthy of recognition. Cr George said that Captain Brausch had told him that he would be quite satisfied with £lO. Cr Fowler said that was a peculiar thing, as only that morning Captain Brausch had told him that he considered it would be an insult to offer him £lO. On a division being taken Crs Roach, Cunnold, Cassin and George voted for the motion, and Crs Donovan, Fowler, Miller and Styles for the amendment. The Mayor voted in favour of the amendment, which was carried.
