O !■ VICTORIAN RACES DERBY WON BY POSEIDON Received November 3, 7 p.m. Melbourne, November 3 The big meeting of the racing carnival opened to-day auspiciously, though the weather might have been finer. Ihe racing generally was good. The Derby produced a far better exhibition than was generally expected. Results :

Yict:ria Derby, 11 mile—Poseidon 1, Antonius 2. Booran 3. Betting—--7 to 2 on Poseidon, s to 1 Booran, 10 to 7 lolaire, 12 to 1 Antonius. lolaire jumped away from a splendid start. At the riverside, Ellis led by four lengths from lolaire. Approaching the bridge, Ellis led by two lengths from Booran, and Poseidon was next. At the far turn, lolaire fell away. The favorite moved up, and in the straight proper took the lead, and won by a length and a quarter. There were four lenghts between second and third. lolaire was last. Time, ihnin iCHsec.
