The annual meeting of the board of governors of the New Zealand Institute commenced to-day, Mr Martin Chapman presiding. The meeting placed on record its sense of deprivation in the death of Professor Hutton and a short adjournment was made as a tribute of respect to the deceased.

Sir James Hector was elected president. The other offices were filled as follows : Treasurer, Mr Joynt; secretary, Mr Gill; editor and librarian, Mr Hamilton.

Dr Coleridge Farr reported that a magnetic survey of the work had been resumed, and the observational work would be completed within the next two or three months.

A motion that a summary of fchs meteorological returns be included in the volumes of the transactions of the Institute was negatived.
