BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Ths Council met on Tuesday evening, Present : The Mayor, and Councillors Harding, Dunlop, Coleman, Hepburn, Townley, Lucas, Wbinray, and Lewis. The Bead Overseer (Mr Wilkinson) reported that the cost of raising the Taruberu footbridge amounted to £l6 17s fid, also that one of the diagonal braces at the bridge had been broken by the Tuna. Borne repairs had been made to the swing of tbe Turanganui bridge, •t a cost of £6 4s 6d, and £3 14a had been expended on the Waikanae footbridge. He suggested that fender piles should be placed a: each of the bridges, so as to prevent damage being done by the vessels going up the river. He also recommended that some hard wood piles should be obtained for the tu.utable of tbe Turanganui bridge, as the two that are in now are giving way, and unless they are attended to at once it would be unsafe to open the bridge. Two piles were broken at tbe abutment of this bridge, but they at present appeared quite safe. Tbe day labor amounted to £l7 Ids fid— It was decided to apply to Messrs Nelson Bros, for £1 10s, the cost of replacing the brace of the footbridge. With regard to tbe piles that weie required for the Turanganui bridge, the Council after some discussion, agreed that the Public Works Committee should inspect the work, and also that the Council's financial position at the same time be considered; Committee to report at next meeting. The following accounts were passed:— Charitable Aid Board, £65; Town Clerk, £l6 13s 4d; R. Bobinson, £4 6s 8d; T. Faram, £l3; E. Wilkinson, £l3; Night Watchman, £2 3s 4d; T. Morrison, £8; J. Bmaill, £1; H. C. Boylan, £1 8s 6d; opening bridges, £ll9s; W. H. Clayton, £4 17s; W. Morrison, £6 15s 6d; J. bomervell, £9 8s; W. G. Bcotter, £3 Is 7d; G. Humphreys, £4 6s 6d; J. Jackson, £l9s 6d; F. J. Piesse, £1 Is; Insurance, £l2; Gas Company, £27 7s; Wbataupoko Road Board, £lO. Cr Lucas suggested that Monday next (Sports day) be proclaimed a public holiday instead of Saturday—Agreed to.
