Sad Case of Drowning.
HOW A WOMAN DISCOVERED HER HUSBAND WAS DEAD. (raou oub own cobbbspondknt.) Napier, last night. James Bartlett, baker of Napier, was drowned yesterday afternoon in the Tntaekuri river, near the Meanee Hotel, The deceased and his brother-in-law, Mr Reynolds, were having a bath, and the deceased must either have struck a stump and got injured or been seized with the cramp. Mr Reynolds —■ was some distance off when he saw Bartlett in difficulties, struggling violently. Reynolds reached him just as he was sinking, and though he endeavored to rescue him was unsuccessful. Mrs Bartlett and Mrs Reynolds were bathing in the shallow water lower down, and tbe first intimation they had of the occurrence was seeing Bartlett’s body drifting down towards them. The body was then quickly rescued, but though every endeavor was made to restore animation life was extinct. The deceased leaves a widow and three children.
