Order of Oddfellows.

THE QUINQUENNIAL INVESTIGATION. The quinquennial investigation of the Order of Oddfellows, Gisborne lodge, is to hand, and from it are taken the following facts:—At the date of the investigation (December 31, 1886) the members of the Lodge numbered 33, of the average age of 32 years, 39 weeks, and the Benefit Funds amounted to £953 7s 6d, or an average of £2B 17s 7d each. The number of years of life at risk for benefits for the five years is found to have been 153, the number sick for the same period is returned as 27, and the sickness is given as 238 weeks, and the amount paid in respect of the same is given at £162 7s. The percentage ef members sick is a little below the average, the average sickness per member, per annum, is a little above the average, and the sickness per member sick is 1'3940 above the average for the district. When compared with the expectation, according to the tables used in the valuation, I find that the sickness has been a little above the expectation, and that the mortality has been nil, both for members and their wives. The average rate of interest realized by the funds for the five years preceding the date of valuation was as follows :— £3-4298 during 1882, £4-0423 during 1883, £4-2371 during 1884, £B-0665 during 1885, and £3*5285 during 1886, being an average rate of £4 13s 2|d for the five years. Besides the above actually received, there was owing to the lodge, for interest due, the Bum of £3B 9s, not included in this valuation. The contributions for the benefits assured range from 2s 7|d to 4s 2d per lunar month. The average rate of payment for all the members is £2 per annum. This valuation has been made on the assumption that the future sickness and mortality will not exceed that experienced by the Manchester Unity in Great Britain for the years 1866-70, and that the rate of interest realised oil the funds for the future will be four per cent. The b-lance sheet showed a surplus of £397 17s 3.
