Life Saving At Fires.
Our attention has been called to a very important resolution passed at the recent Fire Brigade Conference in Dunedin. This was to the effect that at future competitions prizes and certificates should be offered for the best exhibits of life saving apparatus. At the present time in Now Zealand there can be no question that too little attention is paid to those useful appliances to which, in crowded especially, so many people annually owe their lives. The ordinary fire •scape, and a few ropes coiled inside the upper windows of some of our hotels, constitute, we believe, the whole of the life saving apparatus to be found in Wellington, Anveatorii could not exercise their brains to a nobler purpose, and we allude to the subject now because the 12 months, or nearly so, which will elapse before the next competition will be held, should afford plenty of time for good ideas to be evolved and elaborated. The Fire Brigade Association, in stimulating research in such a humanitarian field of enquiry, is doing an excellent work which is worthy of all commendation, and we hope to see it taken up far and wide. There are busy brains and willing hands in New ..Zealand to conceive aud to contrive, •nd we now indicate one direction in which genius and energy may find a worthy outlet. Captain Mitchell, of the Port Chalmers Brigade is president of the association, anti Mr. G. J. Gilbert, sub-superintendent of the Napier Fire Brigade, is secretary. Either of these gentlemen, if written to, will be happy to supply any information which may be desired on the subject.— Wellington Post.
