BASSINETS FOR MAIN TRUNK TRAINS

WELLINGTON, November 13. From Wednesday next, mothers travelling in sleeping cars on Wel-lington-Auckland express trains will be able to hire bassinets for their infants, said the Minister of Railways (the Hon. R. Semple). As the introtroduction of this service is to be in the nature of a trial, only four bassinets have been made, but should the experiment prove successful the amenity will be extended to all overnight trains between Wellington and -Auckland and between Christchurch and Dunedin. Completely portable bassinets have been specially designed for the purpose. They are made of light tubular steel, chromium-plated, and unbleached calico, with a detachable flap at the head to shade a child’s eyes from the light. Each bassinet is provided with a kapoc mattress and waterproof sheet, but the mother will be expected to supply a pillow and blankets. Both mattress cover and canvas holder are removable to facilitate laundering.
