TNT, TURF FINE N.Z. CUP TRIAL RUN BY EXCELLENCY AT INVERCARGILL

INVERCARGILL, November 13. Excellency was responsible for a fine New Zealand Cup trial when she got up to win the Southland Handicap in a photo finish at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting yesterday. The weather was fine and the track fast. Excellency was back _ in seventh position on the rails until about two furlongs from home, when W. F. Ellis took her to the outer. f She was still standing the leaders about five lengths at the distance,, but she bridged the gap in brilliant style, and won by a neck from Billy Mac, which ran a great race. After a slow start, Billy Mac raced round the field and disputed the lead into the straight with Merry Lancer and the pair fought it out stride for sti‘ide, to the post. Mount Barker was close up fourth after being in the first three throughout, and Jimmy the One and Signal Officer followed in close order. Signal Officer was with Excellency at the two furlongs, but he made his run next to the rails in the straight. He looked to have a winning chance with a furlong to go, but was blocked over the final furlong. He was finishing on strongly and was responsible for a pleasing run. Sir Garnish was last at the six furlongs and moved up to be handy at the* home turn, but did not carry on in the straight, although it was a solid effort considering the ground he was required to make up. Some Sal failed to run on. ' , The Stewards’ Handicap candidates Full Play and The Hob, missed the jump-out in the Taramoa Handicap but they did not show much dash at any stage of the race. Full Play was back in the middle of the field throughout, and The Hob was. at the rear almost all the way, . with his stablemate, Frances. Special Flight waited, in behind the pace-makers, Nigger Lad and Waicoe, to the straight and then shot clear to win full of running by three lengths from Nigger Lad. Naughty Lady was always prominent and finished a close third. Sea Venture,, fourth, had every chance. Mr. Micawber finished on for fifth, and the New Zealand Cup candidate, Eriskay, came home particularly well in sixth place.
