HARIHARI NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) The new automatic telephone exchange here which has been under construction for this last 12 months is now just about completed. Much credit must go to the stall, who have carried out the work in all weathers and have the job completed within such a short space ot time. On taking into consideration the number of poles which have had to be erected and most ol them had to be sunk with the aid ol a crow bar and shovel. The new service will commence operations tomorrow (Wednesday). The service will be in operation from Mount Bonar in the north down to Mount Hercules in the south, also linking the Poreua valley in the east and to the lower end of Peterson’s Road and extending further down to the La Fountaine Sawmill at Levett Bros. The settlers wish to thank Mr. J. B. Kent, M.P., for ha’dng had this liink-up installed since being elected member fcr West land two years ago. The whitebait situation locally has improved. Some fairly good catches were made in the last week in both the Big and Little Wanganui Rivers.

Mr. A. Searle, one of those engaged in the whitebait fishing, had a lucky escape from losing his life one day last week. He left the Saltwater with a cart load of fish drawn by horse. When crossing one of the streams, the horse at d cart went out of sight with the driver aboard, falling into a deep holo in the river. The driver rose first, and called out for help to one of his mates on the opposite side ot. the river. The horse and cart were sa’l-ly taken to the opposite side of the river. 1 may state that the fish which were in. the vehicle was also saved, and brought a high price on the Christ church market. Mr. F. Wordham, of Evans Creek, was a visitor to Hokitika last week. Mr. and Mrs. M. Patrick, paid a visit to Hokitika last week. Mr. G. Groufsky, of Hokitika, was here on a visit last week. Rev. K. O. Bathurst, of the Vic•arage, is at present a patient in the Westland Hospital. Mrs. P. Sweeney, of Palmerston North, i.s at present on a visit to the district. Mrs. J. Patterson, who has been on a visit to Wellington, has returned. Messrs J. Jeffries and R. Thomas of Hokitika, paid a business visit here last week.
