FRENCH PETROL FOR AUSTRALIA IN LARGE QUANTITY

(Rec. 9.55). SYDNEY. Nov. 7. Mr J. C. Duncan, associate director of Ampol Limited, returned here by air from London to-day, after negotiating the purchase of nine million gallons of French petrol. He said: “1 am surprised at the Government going ahead with petrol rationing in view of the availability of non-dollar petrol”. He said that he was expressing only his own opinion. It was based on personal observation, and he said that the Government might have information which he did not possess. As far as he knew, there was enough petrol available from various sources to prevent the necessity for the reintroduction of rationing. He said French petrol sellers had assured him that the petrol which they offered had no dollar content. This petrol would be shipped by the Ampol Company’s own tankers, and it would reach Australia before Christmas.
