WESTPORT GAS WORKS EXTENSION

The chairman of the gas committee Councillor J. M. Fairbairn, at the meeting of the Westport Borough Council, made a statement as to allocation of proceeds of the sale of electrical assets as follows..—As chairman I feel that the gas consumers should be advised regarding the improvements to be made to the works and reticulation from portion of the proceeds of sale of electrical assets allocated by the council to my committee. The amount to be expended in the Gas Department is £6OOO, to be applied as follows: purchase of an exhauster and a napthelene washer; extension of buildings; setting of the fourth bed of retorts and extension of larger mains. The exhauster will improve pressure at the works, while the washer will improve the supply generally. The setting of the fourth bed of retorts will almost double the present capacity of the works, so that supply can be given to many new -consumers as development goes on. The amount provided for extension of the larger mains should enable' the six-inch main to be carried on down Derby Street to Cobden Streel It will be remembered that the eightinch main has been carried along Will Street to Derby Street out of the loan money, and along Derby St a six-inch main will soon reach Brougham Street, so that by the time all this extension is completed, supply shoudl be excellent in all the north areas of the Borough. A summary of the mains laid is a:follows: —

Eight-inch—-20 chains; 6-inch— r chains; 4-inch 59 chains; 2-inch chains; 11-inch —122 chains. Mam cha’ns of mains have also been clean ed in all ports of the Borough.

Other works completed out of the loan money have been the re-sheating of the small holder; the setting o' three beds of retorts; the renewal of many services and meters as wel 1 as the work of main extension se' out above, which will complete all the work for which the loan provided The gas manager and the staff are to be congratulated on the fine work performed in connection with the expending of the loan and with the additional £6ooo|, now provided as above, the department can go even further ahead, and give a good supply and service to all parts of the Borough in readiness for the tinv when competition from other sources will be a factor with which to reckon.
