The Building and Sanitary Inspector, Mr. A. E. G. Knight, reported to Westport Borough Council that last month, seven and a half chains of 9 inch storm-water mains were laid: three and a half chains of 6in. stormwater mains and threequarter chain of 4in. storm-water ’ mains. Two sewer connections using one and a half chains of 4in. pipes and 16 storm water taps were lilted. Seventeen Building Permits were issued, the estimated cost of work being £1,475. Nineteen Plumbing and Drainage permits were issued. A Lodging House License and a Food Premises License. Fees totalled £23/15/-.

In a review of the past year the report stated eleven new private dwelling-houses were erected of an estimated value of £12,458, and 87 alterations and additions to dwellings and sheds valued at £11,075. Some 18 State Houses have been completed and occupied and 37 State houses are under construction, a total of 55 State units of an estimated value of £77,000, and other Government buildings of an estimated value of £5,171-12-0. The total value of all buildings last year is estimated at £105,705. Other fees collected totalled £369.

Drainage Work comprised 31 stormwater traps installed: 15 Sewer connections made; 8 Man-holes built; 10 Blocked drains cleared; 20 Chains of 4in.pipes, 17 chains of 6in. pipes and 74 chains of 9in. pipes were used to carry out extensions to existing sewer and storm-water mains.

The Traffic Inspector (Mr. M. W. Allerly) reported: The town has been patrolled at night as well as in the day. One patrol was done on a Sunday night. Two Transport Dept., Traiffic Inspectors asisted with the patrols at the Race week-end. The Road Traffic Instructor for Schools has visited all the schools in Westport and after each visit he patrolled in the vicinity of that school. It is noticeable that the school children are more traffic conscious than the majority' of adults and this might be through the instructions not only from the Instructor in Safety, but' also from the teachers at the Schools. There are still many applicants for] new Licenses to drive, and during! September the following were tes-1 ted: Private Car 12', Light Trade I Motor 2, Heavy Trade Motor 1, Motor Cycle (Including re-tests) 3. To date 829 Motor Drivers’ Licenses have been issued by the West port Borough Council. A new culvert has been placed at the Friendly Societies Pedestrian Crossing. It might be well to bear in mind that Xmas is not far off and a time should be set aside for the repainting of the Crossing etc., in Westport. Although these Crossings have been painted only a short, time it is in the interest of safety that frequent regular maintenance of painted crossing visibility is essential. Cyclists are still being observed at night without lights a’nd are being prosecuted. One motorist was observed to drive along the footpath in the early hours of the morning and was issued with a Traffic Offence Notice. Unfortunately for him, he had failed to renew his drivers license and this offence was added to the Notice. There are still a number of cars with insufficient lights at the rear to show up the number plate clearly, and a drive against this offence has commenced.
