Seaman Accused of Threats to Kill Woman

P.A. NEW PLYMOUTH, October 12. Threats to kill, allegedly made to Bessie Monoa Anglem, of 94, Marine Parade, Bluff, Southland, in a letter posted at Wellington, were the subject of a charge against Gerad Alfred Hodges, a seaman, aged 22; in the Police Court at New Plymouth today. He was remanded in custody to appear to-morrow. Hodges, a single man, was described as a native of England. He was arrested this afternoon. He is a member of the crew of the steamer Waipahi, now in port at New Plymouth. The letter is alleged to have been sent by Hodges between July 1 and 31, 1949. An ingredient of the charge in respect of the letter is that he sent it “knowing the contents thereof”.
