TARIFF CUTS BY TEN COUNTRIES COMING SOON

(Rec. 9.40). OTTAWA, October 4. Canada next week would announce tariff cuts to ten countries, so informed sources here said to-day. This would pave the way for greater multi/iteral trade. The Prime Minister, Mr St. Laurent, or a Cabinet Minister is expected to disclose the details of reduced tariffs on about two hundred commodities on Monday next. Almost simultaneously, high Government officials in the United States, Britain, and twenty other member nations of the Geneva Pact were expected to make similar announcements.

Ten countries applied for entry into the Pact at the recent conference at Annecy in France. The twenty-three original member nations have signed agreements to reduce their tariffs in such a way that no member could discriminate against another in favour of a third.

P.A. WELLINGTON, October 5. The Minister of Customs, Rt. Hon. W. Nash, stated to-night that the announcements referred to in the Ottawa cable message were probably connected with a Trade and Tariff Agreement made at Annecy in France earlier this year. It was understood that this agreement would be signed at Lake Success next week. Mr Nash said that the alterations to the New Zealand tariff would be of a minor nature. The conference at Annecy followed on the trade and tariff conferences held at Geneva and Havana. New Zealand was represented by the Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Mr J. P. D. Johnsen.
