The police are understood to have now ruled out the theory that Gordon James Pepper, the English immigrant who died at his boardinghouse at Blockhouse Bay, apparently from poisoning, committed suicide. Whatever killed him, he consumed unsuspectingly. It is understood that an effervescent drink which Pepper is believed to have consumed about 5.15 on Saturday afternoon, figures in the case.
