NEGRO CLERGYMAN ARRESTED ON MURDER CHARGE
(Rec 7.45) NEW YORK, Sept 25. Shortly after he had preached a sermon on, “Faith, Hope and Love,” a Negro clergyman was arrested tonight, and was charged with a murder. He is Rev. Beecher Jackson, aged 36, the Pastor of Newark (Nev/ Jersey) Presbyterian Church. The police said that Jackson admitted that he had killed Earl Wells, a 7C-year-old sexton, with an ice pick. He claimed that it was in selfdefence during an argument at the paisonage on Friday night. Jackson said that he had .started to take Wells to hospital, but he realised that be was dead and he- then dumped his body behind a hei'ir tavern.
