(Rec. 11.25). PERTH, August 24. A British steamer, the Avismoat, of 7174 tons, carrying a cargo of coal for Australia, is in trouble in the mid-Indian Ocean, about 1000 miles west of Fremantle. A British freighter, the Raranga, which was following the Avirmoat from Durban to Fremantle, is speeding to her assistance. The master of the Avismoat reported early this morning that the ship was running before a southerly gale and that two hatches have been blown off. Later the master radioed that the Avismoat was hove to awaiting the Raranga. The Avismoat decided to make for Fremantle on Sunday, after several minor explosions had caused a fire in one hold. ’The fire was brought under control.
