Labour Minister And Watersiders
P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 24 Hon. A. McLagan was to-night asked to comment on a statement, published yesterday, which appeared to convey an impression that he was negotiating with th e national executive of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union regarding terms of a settlement of the waterfront dispute. The Minister of Labour replied that he was not, and that he had not been negotiating with the- Waterside Workers’ National Executive on that, or on any other question. The executive, he said, had met him, and had expressed the union’s desire for a resumption of the meetings of the Waterfront Industry Authority. He had told the union that he would convey their request to the Government, and would advise them of the Government’s reply.
