Unions Pay £5000 Fines as Leaders Ask Release From Gaol

(Rec. 10.50). SYDNEY, August 23. The applications by the eight union leaders who are seeking release from gaol, where they are serving their sentences for contempt of the Arbitration Court, were heard to-day. There were also before the Arbitration Court applications by the Miners’ Federation, the Waterside Workers Federation, and the Federated Ironworkers’ Association for the remission of fines totalling five thousand pounds which were imposed on the unions. , . . After hearing the apologies of the leaders and addresses by counsel, Chief Judge Kelly announced, late this afternoon, that the Court needed time to consider fully various aspects of the applications, and that it would give its decision to-morrow afternoon.
