Small quantities are being railed to Christchurch, coming mostly from South Westland . The Westland Rugby Sub Um,on arranged for the Hokitika fourth gradschool team to play a curtain raise, with St Mary’s fourth grade tea.. . today to the Dittman Shield game. Si Marys team will be strengthened bt the inclusion of some college players and the match will afford a high standard of football. An application to the West Coast Union to play the ! .latch was refused and the latter ar- ■ ' -icnts have been made to give patrons the opportunity of seeing th L..U.H in action. A petition, signed by 15 residents in the eastern portion of Gibson Quay, was presented to the Borough Council against erection of a sawmill on the northern bank of the r ver. Th e area is controlled by the Harbour Board and the Borough and is- within the Borough of Hokitika. The Harbour Board granted the site to the sawmiller for the erection of the building. Cr. Ross asserted it was a disgrace to have a mill close to a residential area. He would object if it were near his home. The Board should have consulted the Council. Cr. D. D. Lyness moved that when application to erect the mill was made by the owner, it be refused—The motion was carried. Cr. Havill and the other councillors all supported the motion. All the Councillors also supported Cr. Lyness in a proposal to seek an automatic telephone service for Hokitika. It was resolved to ask the Health Department for a reduction in the contribution of this Council towards the salary for the Health Inspector until such time as a resident inspector is provided for Hokitika. It was decided to ask drovers not to take stock to the abattoir between the hours of B—98 —9 a.m.; 12—1; ana 3 15—4.15 p.m. of each school day. It ■ was decided to have the middle gate of Cass Square opened for the public. The Health Department advised that the Council’s proposal to sell water to the Mental and Westland Hospitals is approved in principle provided there is no undue delay m completion of the Kaniere scheme, but if supply is not available for a number of years owing to delay in proceeding with the work it will be obvious that the hospital will be required to take steps to supplement their present supplies. The South Island Public:ty Assn., Christchurch, asked financial support for publication of a guide book. The Council granted £lO Cr. Peat offering to supply free photographs of scenic spots of Westland. The Town Clerk. Greymouth, advised his Council requested a meeting with Hokitika Council to discus? the estabIshment of a central abattoir. It was decided that the Greymouth abattoir committee be 1 asked to send delegates down to Hokitika to discuss the matter. Stock slaughtered here in July were: Cows 8, pigs 37, sheep 92. heifers 6, bullocks 113. Expenditure for the month—£loo 6s ,10d, against £77 11s lOd for the sameperiod last year. The Sexton reported five interments for July. The Engineer Mr. P. Johnstone, reported that last month various water services were renewed. Tar-sealing equipment would arrive about November. Some hundred feet of piping had been laid down in drainage. The very wet month tested the newly laid Sewell Street drain and several times to capacity. It must be saving the north area of the town a lot of coding. Rain was detrimental to street surfaces, pot-holing being very bad. A start was made on filling in the potholes and 80 yards of gravel was used. Weld Street had ,-been gravelled between Davie and J ollie Streets and 140 yards of gravel used. The Minister of Works recently advertised the flood gate for contract hpt no tenders were received. He suggested the drainage of the lowlying areas of the borough as follows: A connecting sewer to be run from Hall Street to Bealey Street, there enlarging it to be run to Fitzherbert Street drain, then enlarging to run to a point, to be decided, between the Fitzherbert Street drain and the Post Office. The Tancred 'Street sewer would be run to connect to the Sewell Street drain and thence to the point between the Fitzherbert Street drain and the Post Office. At this .point it woul dbe necessary to install a pump-house and pump capable of handling the peak flow of the sewers which would be in the. vicinity of 25,000 gallons per minute, which would mean installing a pump approximately of 35 horsepower. The pumping apparatus could be installed to come into operation at a level to he determined by survey of the levels of the lower areas of the town. The scheme would probably cost in the vibinity of c 6,000. It should be reasonable to expect the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council to contribute £l.OOO they were going to spend on installing flood gates. The remaining amount would have to be raised by loan. The. scheme would have to be gone into thoroughly from an engineering point before an accurate estimate could be arrived at. The works committee was instructed to report on the matter at next meeting. Cr. Peat said he had been informed rats were eating their way under some of the roads and coming up through holes in the top. Varied comments were made on this information. Residents of north Brittan Street applied for a street light at the northern end. This was referred to the engineer for attention. It was decided to grant the Scout Group a hall site on land between Park and Hall Streets.
