WORLD WOOL CROP DROP LAST YEAR
(Rec. 9.55). LONDON, August 18. At 3,720 million pounds weight, the world wool production during 194748 was the smallest for many years. Reporting this to-day. the Commonwealth Economic Committee, comprising officials, high commissioners, and trades commissioners of the Dominions, states that a slight recovery is expected in the figures for 194849. The committee stated that the demand from importing countries was largely for Merino and fine crossbred wool, despite the relative cheapness of medium and coarse crossbred. A gap between production and consumption was met from Dominion stocks accumulated during the war. Total exports from the five chief wool countries was 2,210 million pounds weight, against 1,607 million pounds in 1937-38. Britain was the main market in the year reviewed.
