Grey County Buildings To be Bought by Highways Board

A tender of £3OB 4s from the No. 12 District Highways Council was yesterday accepted by the Grey County Council for the purchase of four Council buildings at Barrytown. on the Greymouth-Westport main highway, comprising a hut (£5l). truck garage (£81), grader garage (£l5l 4s), and petrol store (£2's). The Council received advice from the Minister of Works (Hon. R. Semple) proclaiming land as a road in Block VII, Mawheranui S.D. The Acting Resident Engineer, Ministry- of Works, advised that a proposal for the piping of the drain fronting the Ahauva school did not qualify, for a subsidy from the Roads Vote. On the motion of Cr J. Ryali it was decided to take the matter up with the Minister of Works. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote regarding improvements to the sub-divided ex-servicemen’s farm settlement at Kopara. It was stated that the land was intercepted by a river. A cage near the ford for crossing the river was unsafe, and the bridge needed rebuilding. Cr J. Mulcare asked if anyone was familiar with the locality and knew what was required. Cr W. Fisher-.said it would be a big undertaking to build such a large bridge as was needed in this case for one homestead. He thought the cottage would be better situated on the other side of the river, which would to a large extent eliminate the necessity for a bridge. Cr Mulcare: “We don’t want a repetition of the Cornish case at the Kopara”. On Cr Clayton’s motion, it was decided to approach the Minister of Works for a 'free grant for items mentioned by the Commissioner of Crown Lands. This was seconded by Cr Fisher. Mi- J. Wilson, of Moana, was granted a load of shingle for a pathway to his home. Mr P. J. Galway, of Rapahoe, wrote asking for ah access road to his section. The engineer said the estimated cost was £2BO. It was decided to ask Mr Galway for a contribution towards the cost, and to apply for a subsidy from the Lands and ‘Mines Department. Two applications were received to rent the Council's cottage at Orwell Creek. After some discussion, it was decided the applications be held over until the engineer made a further inspection of the cottage, The secretary of the Moonlight--81 at ey Creek Sports Club wrote regarding improvement of the road to the sports ground. It was suggested that a representative . of the Council interview Mr F. Kennedy, who would point out the improvements required. The engineer was instructed to interview Mr Kennedy. Mr D. W. Tolchard, traffic inspec'tor, in his report on the control of traffic within the county for the month ended March 31, stated that nineteen examinations were conducted for drivers’ licences. . There were four failures, and 15 licences were granted. Warnings were issued to two first offenders. ‘ It was also pointed out that it was necessary for heavy duty vehicles to wear the H plates.
