Jews Allege British Troop Violation of Transjordan Truce
NEW YORK, March 22. Israel complained to the Security Council to-day that the presence of. British troops at Akaba was a violation of the council’s resolution of May 25, 1948, and might have an adverse effect on the current armistice negotiations between Israel and Transjordan. . The resolution forbade the introduction of lighting personnel to any countries engaged in the Palestine conflict. The Israeli delegation issued a statement later saying that the reinforcement of the British forces at Akaba last week was an aggravation of the original infringement and the forces should be withdrawn promptly. The statement added that Israel was not asking the council to take action at present. COMPLETELY CHANGED
In Washington, the Israeli Foreign Minister, Mr Moshe Sharett, complained to Mr Dean Acheson that the British troop movements in Transjordan jeopardised the efforts to bring about Palestine peace. Mr Sharett told reporters later that the British action had completely changed the atmosphere. The British United Nations delegation at Lake Success said the movement of British troops to Akaba was necessary because of the _ previous apparently aggressive intentions of Israeli forces.
The spokesman emphasised that the British movements were in line with the long-standing treaty agreements with Transjordan and had been duly reported to the United Nations.
