COMMUNISTS AFRAID OF CZECHS ON COUP ANNIVERSARY
PRAGUE, February 22. On the anniversary of the Communist overthrow of the Benes Government, armed Communist patrols have been formed in Prague and other centres to back un increased police forces and militia during “Revolution Week”. The police for several days have been making spot inspections of identity papers in cafes, restaurants, and trams. Strong police guards have been placed round public buildings, including the post office. The homes of Government and Communist Party leaders have since February 19 been well guarded. Only tested bona fide Communists, including women, are accepted for the patrols, and there has been no public announcement of their formation. Prague’s Mayor has issued a warning against the illegal manufacture of explosives. The Premier, M. Antonin Zapotocky, broadcast to counteract rumours that he had been “done away with”, and also to extol the progress made since the Communists took over power. M. Zapotocky said: “I am not speaking to you from beyond the grave. Some people thought I was already buried, but I am still alive”.
