(Our Own Correspondent)

HOKITIKA, Feb. 23

Following very heavy rain, the river was in high flood this morning. The water backed up the street drains. Hamilton Street and part of Sewell Street were flooded. The HauIti was specially moored against the flood. Rain stopped loading operations. The vessel will not sail until Thursday morning. As a result 01 the flood the channel over the bar should be deepened and a continuance of shipping should be assured. Mr H. Staines who has left to take over a bakery business in Papanui, has been employed as baker and pastry cook for many years at H. B. Preston’s. He was a prominent rugby footballer and a member of the Referees’ Association for some years. He was farewelled by employees of the firm and the proprietors and tendered a presentation.
