CROQUET PLAY HELD UP BY RAIN
Because of heavy rain yesterday afternoon, play in the second day of the West Coast Croquet Association’s annual tournament was postponed. However, good progress was made in the morning in the ■ handicap doubles and the championship singles. Probably the best match of the day’s play was in the championship singles when Mrs Howard of Runanga, defeated’ Mrs Rhodes, of Dunedin, 26 to 25. This match was closely contested throughout, and the general opinion was that it could have been anybody’s game. Playing consistently good croquet in the second life of the championship singles yesterday afternoon, Mrs Slee of " Westport, easily defeated Mrs Brunt, of Nelson, 26-1. Results: — HANDICAP DOUBLES First Round: Mrs Hooper and Miss McKnight (Greymouth) defeated Mesdames Brunt. (Nelson) and Dickie (Christchurch) 26-14; Mesdames Mercer and Prescott (Greymouth) defeated Mesdames Martin and Hosking (Christchurch). 26-16; Mesdames Nottle and Slee (Westport) defeated Mesdames McKechnie and Duncan (Cobden), 26-10; Mesdames Howard and Wilson (Runanga) defeated Mesdames Rhodes (Dunedin) and Gandle (Christchurch) 26-12; Mrs Hooper and Miss McKnight (Greymouth) defeated Mrs Hawke and Miss McDowell (Ashburton) 26-22; Mrs Hoskin?; (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Bull (Christchurch) 26-10. CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES Second Life (second round): Mrs Slee (Westport) defeated Mrs Brunt (Nelson) 26-1; Mrs Nicholls (Christchurch) defeated Mrs Crandell (Christchurch) 26-9; Mrs Howard (Runanga) defeated Mrs Rhodes (Dunedin) 26-25. The Association hopes to make an early start this morning, weather permitting.
