WATAROA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent)

A tennis match between Wataroa and Hokitika at the week-end had to be postponed, much to the disappointment of the visitors, because of heavy rains which was experienced in the district. Only minor flooding ocurred, but there was a high wind. Mr Don Murray of Christchurch, visited Wataroa at the week-end. Mr Mcßobie of the Post and Telegraph Department visited Wataroa during the week. Mr R. Nossiter, of National Airways was a week-end visitor to Wataroa.

Following the recent floods, repairs are being made to the road between Waiho and Mr L. R. Gibbs’s property. At Tatere, Messrs Condon and Sons are endeavouring to cope with creek erosion on their property. The assistance of the Catchment Board should be forthcoming to save this valuable grazing area. Some hold-up in getting South Westland softwoods shipped to Australia is reported. This will be unfortunate and sawmillers should endeavour to nut the position fully before the authorities, as South Westland possesses a valuable asset in the white pine forests, the timber from which is so keenly in demand in Australia.
