Mr Allan ..Smith was a passenger by yesterday’s express from Christchurch.

Mrs A. Clarke, of Franz Josef, who arrived at Greymouth on Monday, has entered the Grey Hospital for treatment.

Mr George F. Rox, manager of the “Amazing Mr Rooklyn” Magical and Vaudeville Co., is at present in Greymouth arranging for the company’s forthcoming season here.

At a special meeting of the Grey Hospital Board last evening, Mr F. H.' Rowse, of Greymouth, was appointed storeman-ambulance driver. There were seven applicants.

Mr P. C. Watson (Chief Traffic Inspector for New'“Zealand), Mr J. Airnsworth (Senior Inspector, Wellington) and Mr C. Petersen (Acting Senior Inspector, Christchurch) will arrive here to-day on an official visit.

Mr M. J. Angland, Inspector of Police at Greymouth, resumed duties yesterday after sick leave. Sub-In-spector J. Edwards, of Wellington, who has been relieving Mr Angland, has left on his return.

In the October examinations of the Insurance Institute of New Zealand, two Greymouth candidates were successful, in the life insurance section. They were Messrs V. Keating (proposals') and P. J. O’Hanlon (Correspondence, part 2).

Dr. N. E. Edson was yesterday appointed first professor of biochemistry in the Otago Medical School. The chair has just been created. Dr. Edson has been associate professor of biochemistry since 1944 and is a Travis Research Fellow. He holds the Ph.Dd. of Cambridge.

Mr James Mcßride, formerly of Greymouth, has been transferred from the head office of the Labour and Employment Department to the Greymouth office, and commences duties next Monday. Mr J. J. Wilson, of the Greymouth staff, has been transferred to Wellington in Mr McBride’s place.

To mark the 87th. birthday of Mr William Tuckey, of Rutherglen, Mr and Mrs Nathan Rothwell entertained a large, number of guests at the Lake Mahi'napua Hotel on Saturday. Those present included many visitors from Greymouth and other parts of the West Coast. Mr Tuckey’s health was proposed by Mr L.
