MAN DIES AFTER SURF RESCUE

DUNEDIN, Feb 21

Rescued in an exhausted condition from the sea at Ocean Beach, Brighton, on Saturday, a man was taken by ambulance to the Dunedin Public Hospital, but, on arrival at 4.40 p.m. he was found to be- dead. He was Herbert Strang, a married man, of 103 Carroll Street. With the aid of an inflated tyre tube, Strang rode a heavy swell for three hours before he was rescued. Strang and two companions were thrown into the water when a heavy swell upset their dinghy. Strang clung to the rubber tube, but his companions managed to right the dinghy and with one oar they went in shore. They were unable to go to Strang’s assistance because of the heavy sea and the fact that they had only one oar. A specially manned boat put out for Strang and brought him to the shore at Brighton. Artificial respiration was immdiately applied. He was then placed in an ambulance to be taken to hospital.
