ENGINEERS IN CONFERENCE

About 250 professional . engineers from all parts of the Dominion met at Auckland to-day in the annual conicrence of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers. now and r riday the conference will discuss technical papers, tour engineering works join in social events. , Opening the conference, tne A4a>or, Mr J. A. C. Allum, himself a member of the institute for 28 years, said that deserved recogntion of engineers work and proper remunerative assessment of their ability were lacking in New Zealand. “In so many avenues ol emoio>ment,” he proceeded, “engineeis remunerations are controlled by central authorities which piobably know little about engineering. and are unable to assess individual skill and ability of this kind.’’ , Salaries in New Zealand were. probably only half what they were in the United States. There were few men so important to general and local government and it was unfortunate that engineers found days -’■owded with vexatious, frustrations and delays, he added. __
