NEW COAL CRANES AT WELLINGTON

WELLINGTON, February 15

A faster turn-round of ships and, therefore, a greater supply of coal should result from the installation of six new electric grab cranes in Wellington late next year. These cranes should unload' coal half as fast again as the 10 hydraulic ones now used at the Railway Wharf. The combined capacity of the grabs on the new cranes is 12 tons. The present ones each have a capacity of only 15cwt. Northern Aotea Quay will became the new discharge point for colliers when the cranes are erected there. The cranes on the Railway Wharf will be dismantled and the wharf used for ordinary shipping. It is possible that it may take the place of the Ferry Wharf. If so, one side will be used as a berth for interisland ' ferry steamers and the other probably for inter-colonial boats, according to the Wellington Harbour Board engineer, Mr D. G. S. March-? banks.
