In the first half of this month 471 ounces of gold was won by the Ngahere dredge from 162,761 yards for 447 hours, while Grey River dredge won 15iozs from 132,761 yards for 214 hours. The West Coast Cricket Association has received advice that the proposed tour of the West Coast by a Canterbury B team over the Christmas and New Year Period has been cancelled. The team was scheduled to play at Greymouth on December 28 and 29. The Slab Hut Creek Gold Dredging Company’s dredge at Mai Mai Is likely to close down shortly. On January 31 a special meeting of shareholders will be held to consider a resolution providing for the winding up of the company and the appointment of Mr E. J. Woolf, as liquidator. It is considered that the company’s assets will be sufficient to meet all debts and probably leave a small amount for distribution to the shareholders. A fracture of the skull and a possible fractured spine were sustained by Gordon Foster-Lynam, aged 26, a married man of Inverness Street, Dunollie when he was struck by a lorry which was being started out-, side' the Rapahoe Hotel on Friday. The members of the Hokitika Borough Council were the guests of the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs A.'E. Perry, at their residence at 5.15 last Thursday afternoon at a cocktail party. Reviewing his first term, the Mayor, proposing the health of Councillors, acknowledged their helpfulness and team work, remarking that their several differences of opinion had not led to argumentation being carried beyond the Council Chambers, and particularly praising Cr. Havill’s work as the head of the Works Committee. The ex-Mayor, Mr A. E. Elcock, who with Mrs Elcock was also present, joined Cr. Havill in acknowledging the kindness of the Mayor and Mayoress.

The West Coast Centre of the N.Z. Swimming Association approved a proposal from the Primary Schools' sports Association . for an annual swimming competition under the auspices .of the Nelson and West Coast Centres among the Seddon Shield districts. It was decided to grant free use of the baths and assistance for West Coast elimination contests, the proceeds to be retained by the Primary Schools’ Sports Association. The secretary was asked to report on the Chatauqua Medal rules, and it was decided that Nelson and West Coast Centres be recommended to confine the competitions to children who have not obtained their Primary School Certificate. It was decided to advise the Nelson Centre that as January 29 and 30 would not suit the. latter, this centre chose February 5 ana 6 for the projected visit to Nelson. It was decided to confirm the names of Miss H. Smith and Mr L. Barry T as nominees for school coaches. The. internal Affairs Department advised that the grant of £BO towards the centre’s sound film projector will shortly be forthcoming. Thp secretary reported that donations of over £22 had been received in response to the annual circular appeal. The members present at the meeting were: Messrs M. R. Bunt (in the chair), J. M.
