HOKITIKA NOTES

. (Our Own Correspondent), HOKITIKA, October 29. South Westland Service: The conversion of the m.v. “Hauiti” at Auckland has been delayed, and it will be some time before the vessel is ready to leave Auckland. At the moment there is nothing definite as to when the vessel will be completed. Mr. W. D. Nolan, of Okuru, who is at present in Hokitika, stated this morning that some effort would have to be made to secure a vessel to make a trip to Jackson’s Bay and southern ports. The only transport at present serving South Westland is National Airways, which is maintained by single-engined Fox Moth cabin machines operating from Hokitika. Material for the Public Works Department, oil and supplies for contractors and supplies for the settlers require sea transport. The whitebait canning factory at Okuru has to ship its canned supplies to main ports, and also receive supplies to continue opeations, these supplies were too heavy for transport by air. Actually, ofily necessary supplies were being sent by air. Mr. Nblan intended to interview the shipping company in an effort to arrange for some trips to be made to the southern ports, if the company could arrange for a vessel. It is highly important that a ship can be procured to make the required trips to southern ports prior to Christmas. Previously the “Ranui,” and the trawler “Nile” made several trips to Jackson’s Bay and Okuru. Personal: The funeral of the late Mrs. Catherine Sullivan, which was largely attended, took place at the Hokitika Cemetery this morning. Requiem Mass at' St. Mary’s Church and the service at the graveside were conducted by Rev. Father Lordan, assisted by Right Rev. Monsignor J. Long. P.P. (Greymouth), Rev. Fathers Leo Daly, McMonagle (Runanga), Kelly (Ross), T. Daly (Grevmouth) and .T. G. O’Sullivan (Hokitika). Mr. W. D. Nolan, Senr., will return to Okuru to-morrow. Mr. N. Every of the staff of the Bank of New South Wales at Hokitika, has received notice of his transfer to Kaikohe, North Auckland. He will leave prior to Christmas and become accountant at the branch. He has been on the staff of the Bank at Hokitika for thb past ten years. Whitebait Supolies: Yesterday afternoon fishermen received a mild surprise, when after days without securing any supplies, whitebait made their run on the afternoon tide. Some of those operating in the lower reaches secured fair catches, one drag-net fisherman securing 27 pounds, while others netted up to 19 pounds. Fishermen are hopeful that supplies will increase with the approach of the spring tides. Up to date the season has been extremely poor. Mr. I. Bennington, Inspector of Fisheries for the Westland distict. was a visitor to Hokitika during the week, making his seasonal round of the district.
