Missing Butter May Be on “Aorangi”

P.A. AUCKLAND, October 27. Exhaustive police inquiries to-day have failed to unravel the mystery of th G 99 cases of butter reported missing from a railway truck alongside the liner “Aorangi", which sailed for Vancouver yesterday afternoon. It is generally believed that the butter was loaded into the “Aorangi” and a mistake made in checking. The chances of a theft on such a large scale without the night watchmen, gatekeepers or ship’s quartermaster noticing it are regarded as remote. Although the tally clerks affirm that no checking mistake was made, it is pointed out that the missing butter represents only two loaded slings. The butter is part of a consignment of 3,000 cases for Honolulu.
