TRAMWAY STOPWORK MEETINGS NEXT MONTH
WELLINGTON, The case for the employers was presented in a statement by Mr P. A. Hansen, national secretary of the New Zealand Tramway Emplpoyees’ Union, that the tramway services throughout the Dominion would be halted on November 10 for stop-work meetings would hear a report from their assessors on the break-down yesterday of the conciliation proceedings for a new award. Mr Dawson’s statement said it was obvious the union was returning to the tactics it had used with some success about two years ago, when during the progress of conciliation proceedings it evaded the normal procedure provided under the I.C. and A Act and had a disputes committee set up under the Strike and Lock-out Regulations. Mr Dawson said that in an endeavour to reach a settlement the employers had offered to accept a very large proportion of the union’s claims, but sought amendment of Die restrictive clauses, which provided for penal rates for working after normal hours of work and similar provisions, which were so harsh and restrictive in their opeation as to pevent the employers from working men under them. All the employers asked was that the matters at issue which were not numerous, should be sent to the Arbitration Court. Meanwhile, he said, the workers were fully protected.
