AIRMAN FAILS IN SMUGGLING EXPLOIT AUCKLAND, August 13 A plea of guilty to a charge of smuggling into New Zealand 150 strings of imitation pearls, four necklaces, and two bracelets was entered in the Magistrate’s Court by Leading Aircraftsman Lionel Dunlop Curiae, aged 21 The Customs Department piosecutor said that when Currier landed at Whenuapai on June 25 as a member of J Force, he declared xor duty three strings of pearls. A constable assisting the customs officials found a number of strings of pearls in his socks and under his shirt .nd jersey. He was wearing another shirt, on which were sewn the remainder of the goods. Defending counsel said Currie was ■.auy,.i K in. g..-. us for an Australian serviceman friend. The Magistrate, Mr Levien, said that as the goods must be forfeited he would impose the minimum fine of 125. FINE FOR A SEXUAL OFFENCE GISBORNE, August 13 A fine of £5O, in default three months' imprisonment with hard labour; was imposed by Mr Justice Cornish in the Supreme Court to-day on Henry August Harrison, aged 20, of Waipiro Bay, who was found guilty on a charge of carnal knowledge. His Honour ordered Harrison to pay the fine in £5 monthly instalments.

ASBESTOS SUITS FAIL TO PREVENT BURNS AUCKLAND, August 13 Three members of the fire crew at the Hobsonville Air Force Station, who yesterday afternoon wore asbestos suits and stood in a tray of burning material, are to-day in the Auckland Hospital, suffering from burns. They are: —Norman Owen Marsh, aged 21, suffering burns; Francis Warren Cheyne, aged 20, burns and shocks; Murray Flynn, burns and shock- The condition of Marsh is fair and of the other two satisfactory. The men underwent a test to accustom themselves to entering flames in fire-proof suits. After the flames were extinguished, they were found to have suffered steam burns. It is believed the suits may have been damp. An inquiry will be held.
