S.P.C.A. Opposes Jewish Slaughtering Method
AUCKLAND, May 6. With a view’to having kosher killing replaced, a suggestion for a conference’ with - the Jewish authorities is to be made to jthe Federation of the SocietyU'for ' the Prevention of Cruelty to+VAnimals by Mr R. H. James. Dominion representative of the Federation, who is touring New Zealand freezing works to investigate slaughtering methods. Mr James has also recommended to freezing works and abattoirs alternative humane methods. While in Wellington Mr James saw koshei’ killing with the use of the Weimberg pen—a large cylinder into which the beast is driven before being turned on its back for slaughtering. It is an alternative to the method —still used in Auckland —of turning the beast over by means of ropes. Under both methods the beast’s throat is cut without prior stunning. “Seeing that the S.P.C.A. stands rigidly for prior stunning, kosher killing, by any methods, is contrary to our standards”, Mr James said, adding that the meat industry and the Agricultural Department had helped him in his investigation, and he was confident that humane slaughtering methods would eventually. be employed throughout New Zealand.
