Sydney Beer Strike Comes to End

SYDNEY. May 8 “The beer is coming on again.” This news was quickly swept through Sydney yesterday by radio broadcasts, newspaper headlines, and word of mouth, after striking maintenance workers at Sydney’s three breweries decided by 164 votes to 78 to return to work next Wednesday, thus ending the sixty-eight days’ beer draught. It. is not likely that draught bee’’ will be available at hotels in normal quantities before Monday week, but bottled beer may be delivered next week.

At a mass meeting yesterday the strikers accepted the recommendation of the Trades Hall Disputes’ Committee to submit the issues in dispute, to an independent arbiter. The strike began sixty-eight days ago on a claim for extra annual and sick leave and demands for improved conditions. Since then the hotels have been serving only spirits and wines, and even these have often been in short supply.
