N.Z. UNIVERSITY HONOURS SIR A. NGATA

WELLINGTON, May 8. Four Maoris, an Indian, and a Chinese, were among the 252 recipients of degrees at the Victoria University College graduation ceremony last night. The most distinguished recipient was Sir Apirana Ngata, whose youngest son, Henare Ngata, was capped soon afterwards. In conferring an honorary degree of Doctor of Literature of the University (Sir David Smith) said the degree was given for an original contribution of special merit to linguistic, literary, social, or historic knowledge. Sir Apirana was one of the most distinguished Maori scholars, and had devoted himself to the study of Maori poetry. His collections were already classics of Maori literature. Henare Ngata received a B.A. degree.
