GENERAL STRIKE AT SINGAPORE
(Rec. 9,55) SINGAPORE, April 23 There were no incidents this morning when, it is estimated, thirty-five thousand workers in Singapore observed a one-day general strike- It was called by the Singapore Federation of Trade Union, in protest against recent police raids on union premises Police jeep patrols toured the streets to guard/ against disorders. The public transport was off the roads causing some inconvenience to the office workers.
The municipal labourers were absent from work, thus causing a stoppage in the town cleaning. However the hospital attendant decided not tn strike “for the sake of the patients-" The position is unchanged in the Harbour Board strike, where there is no work on the ships alongside the wharves.
