BLACKBALL NOTES

[Our own Correspondent] Miss L. Buchan has gone to Christchurch, where she will take up a nursing career. Her many friends extend their best wishes; . ' Miss L. Gardyne, of .Maitai, has been appointed to a position in the local Post Office. Mr R. Burns, of Darfield, who spent the week-end as the guest of Mr and Mrs R. Mountford, Main Road, has returr.ed to his home. - , T . Mr Tom Robertson, Wellington and formerly of Blackball, is spending a holiday here renewing old friendships. Mr W. Pendlebury, Brodie. Street, has again entered Grey Hospital for treatment. ■ r . ~ . The condition of Mr W. McArthur, an inmate of Grey Hospital, is reported to be showing, decided improvement. . , The local butcher’s business, carried on for so long by the Messrs W. Fisher and Sons, of Nelson Creek, has tentatively changed hands, as from Monday, the new proprietors. Messrs Robertson Bros., and Saddlet, of Ngahere, have taken over mid will carry on, on the Blackball side of the Grey River. . , • , A special effort is bcm" made throughout the county, during the forthcoming month of May, on behau of the hungry children of Europe and Asia and meetings to further this laudable object will be held m the respective Ridings during this week. The one in Blackball takes place on Thursday evening when all are invited to attend. . The Minister of Mmes, the Hon. A. McLagan, with Mr C. H. Benny, Un-der-Secretary and their staffs were visitors to Blackball last Friday. They were met by the Union officials of the two .local State Mines, when many matters relevant to the improvement of the local conditions were discussed and straightened out. Stress was put on the necessity of a start being made with the promised water supply for the township and also the need of a hostel for single workmen employed in the local mines This latter request may be met in the very near future

by the conversion of one of the present buildings into a hostel. The party left in the late afternoon for Dobson and Grey mouth. The Grey County have marked out a parking area, before the Miners Hall and Mr L. G. Kinsella’s shop. The idea is to keep these areas clear durin a the time the pictures are m session as a safety measure incase of fire, so as to allow of'a more free exit. This being the only reason for mapping off this “no parking’’ area, motor vehicles are at liberty to park here, on ordinary occasions, so long as they leave it clear, when the hall is occuPi< The Domain Board have from time to time called the attention of the motoring public to the fact that cars are not to be taken on to The Domain grounds and yet the public refuse to co-operate in this request. The avoidance, or open defiance of some motorists leave the Board no other option than to fence up the bottom portion permanently. This is likely to be done I in the very near future. Probably a hockey ga’me will be staged locally this week. The new hockey team is well on its way, with Airs W. Mountford as its president, and Miss H. Mountford as secretarytreasurer. All members are on the committee. Blackball is being well catered for in the nature and versatility of its sports. Let us extend our very best wishes to the hockey team.
