YACHT RACES

WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. Tauranga’s Takapuna class yacht Albatross, skippered by R- Bailey, with B. Hartley as forward hand, won the first race of the 194 S Cornwell Cup contest held at Paremata this afternoon. Tauranga led the fleet from the first windward beat and finished 53 seconds ahead of Auckland, the second coat across the line. Christchurch, 11 seconds astern of Auckland, was third. The ■ cup defender, Paremata, was fourth . by 18 seconds. 'The race was held in the upper harbour at Paremata in moderate to fresh variable north-westerly wind at high tide. The second boat home, Auckland, ripped the bottom of her spinnaker on the second run down to the leeward mark. Although it threatened to burst completely at every gust, the sail held" throughout the two runs and gained Auckland second, place. The Wellington boat, Secret, found the wind too light and from a fair start dropped back to 12th. place, finishing 7 minutes 35 seconds behind Tauranga.
