BLACKBALL NOTES

<Oux Own Correspondent) BLACKBALL, June 27

The Labour Party branch in Roa is going ahead, probably more so than those in the neighbouring townships. They have set out to build a fighting fund, and towards this end intend running socials and dances with probably euchre tournaments in between at stated intervals. The first dance of the series was held two weeks ago and proved a great success. In spite of the other attractions in the Grey Valley, quite a large crowd turned up and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent by everybody. 'Hie dance was held in the Roa Miners’ Hall. The floor was good, as also was the music while the supper met with the highest praise from all present. As a result of the entertainment, the sum of £l2 was added to the fighting fund. Congratulations are extended to Roa.

Blackball, tonight, ought to see a big influx of dancing fans for the first combined annual ball of the Blackball Soccer and Cricket clubs at the Miners’ Hall.

An energetic commitee has the floor in good order, while the ladies committee has arranged for the supper which they provide. A splendid orchestra will be present, assuring first class music, while the usual dancing attractions will be in evidence.

After spending a holiday in the North Island, Mr and .Airs A. L. James, of Sefton, North Canterbury, have been the guests of Mr and Mrs E. W. Bradshaw, the Station Buildings Blackball. Mr Kevin Doolan, of Washdyke, Tirnaru, is spending a holiday with his parents, Mr and Mrs Doolan of Atarau. He has also been visiting his grandmother Mrs D. Kidd, Main Rd., Blackball.

Quite a crowd of soccer enthusiasts left last night by the rail-car and the goods train to be present at the soccer test match to-day at Christchurch. The Coal Council, Messrs Benney, Prcnderville and Carson, visited the Blackball mine during the week and met the union officials on some matters requiring readjustment.
