TIME LOSS IN INDUSTRY

WELLINGTON, June 26. Time lost in industry through accidents exceeded loss through industrial unrest, but more time was lost through sickness, said the Director of Industrial Hygiene (Dr T. O. Garland) addressing the Wellington branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand last evening. This fact was little appreciated in newspaper reports of industrial purest, Dr. Garland said. He had seen a large number of health clauses in some awards and trade unions were interested in. the . workers’ health, but on the whole they were not well informed. The cause was the "lack of technological information. "It is ‘long past the time when medical officers and nurses should be appointed to supervise industrial welfare,” he said. “There should be a protective service for those workers who are exposed to risks.” There was scope for a nation-wide effort to improve the health standard' of workers, Dr. Garland added.
